Bread and Puppet Theater at RM06
A first for this series of conferences! We are pleased to announce that the world-famous Bread & Puppet Theater is coming to RM06. And not only will members of the Bread & Puppet Theater perform at the conference; they've agreed to organize a workshop and create a final performance with the workshop participants. This is a unique opportunity to learn from and perform with an internationally recognized, politically engaged, and extraordinarily inventive theater company. . .On Friday, October 27, from 11:30 to 1:00, two puppeteers from the Bread & Puppet Theater will conduct an hour-and-a-half-long workshop to teach some of their cantastoria--an ancient form of storytelling using pictures and text. Cantastoria is the ancestor of a multitude of forms of storytelling, from the comic book through medicine shows and sideshows to "tableaux vivants" and nickelodeons. (September 28, 2006)
They usually present cantastoria with one or two choruses who respond to or comment on the pictures and text as the story unfolds. It is a very useful form for describing political and social conditions and celebrating or bemoaning life as we know it. They hope that the workshop will inspire participants to go home and make cantastoria for their own purposes. The workshop will be followed at 2:30-3:30 on Friday, October 27 by a performance.
Registered participants and attendees of RM06 are invited to participate in the workshop and, as members of the chorus, in the performance itself. No special skills are necessary--only an interest in learning and performing cantastoria. The workshop will be limited to 15-20 conferees, while the performance will be open to all. So, if you would like to sign up to be part of this exciting, inspiring, and thoroughly engaging workshop, please send an email to David Ruccio at ruccio.1@nd.edu.
