This introduction was published in the inaugural issue of RM (volume 1, number 1), in Spring 1988. The editorial board discuss many topics, including the intellectual and political context for the rekindling of interest in Marxist thought at that time; the emergence of a specifically nondeterminist, class-analytical approach to Marxism; the idea of launching a new Marxist journal in order to give voice to that interpretation (and other critical analytical and philosophical approaches); and the role of the Association for Economic and Social Analysis in “discovering” nondeterminist traditions within Marxism and seeking to broaden the exchange of ideas to continue to develop Marxist thought.
